What reminds us the history of this bell? Speaking about the history, let's turn to one of the most considerable events of Russia – building of Navy at the time of Peter the Great. He chose namely Voronezh as a "cradle" of Russian Navy. On the quay of the present reservoir a ship-building shipyard was constructed, from which first military sailing-vessels “Printsipium”, “Saint Mark”, “Saint Matthew”were launched.
The Assumption Cathedral which is one of the oldest buildings in the city, consecrated all actions connected with shipbuilding. According to Peter's decree this temple became the main cathedral of the Admiralty. Probably, therefore the square of the present city, that is located on the place of the shipyard has been named the Admiralty square. The Russian Navy Ensign /St. Andrew's flag is well-known as a proud symbol of the the naval forces of Russia. But very few people know that it was consecrated in Voronezh (in) 1699 by bishop Mitrofan, who was an assistant of Peter the Great. Today the Admiralty square is a favorite leisure place of towns people.
