The bell is one of the oldest musical instrument in the world. Unconditionally bells have their own peculiarities in different countries. In Russian the word bell is spoken like kolokol. The etymology of this word dates back to the Old Indian word kalakalas, that means noise, shouts. In Greek the word kaleo means call. The Roman Catholics said kalare, that meant to assemble.


Ringing of bells makes always the feeling of magic strength, wizardry and mystery. This impression is made not so much by clam as by clash of the bell. Bells, which played a certain role in Russian history have given occasion to many beautiful legends.

Blissful Matron was born on November, 22nd, 1881 in Sebeno village of the Tula region in a poor family of Dimitrij and Natalia Nikonovy. The girl was blind from a birth.

Since early years/childhood blissful Matron felt approach of danger, foresaw elemental and public disasters. People came to the house of of Nikonovys, to visit the blind girl, wagons , carts with ill people drove over from neighboring villages and settlements, from all the district, from other districts and even provinces. Non-ambulatory were brought, the girl put them on their legs.

According to memoirs of contemporaries, when Matron visited with her neighbors Ioanns monastery in Petersburg, the parson Ioann Kronshtadtsky told suddenly to the churchgoers towards the end of a service: Part! Make way! Matronushka, come to me. Here there is my vicissitude relief - the eighth column of Russia.

In 1925 Matron moved to Moscow, where she lived for the rest of her life. Here she made that spiritually-prayful service which averted many people from destruction and leaded them to rescue. The blissful loved Moscow very much , she said that it is a sacred city,the heart of Russia. Like a never-ending stream people came to her thirsting spiritual physic,a counsel and prayful help. Her prayers healed ailing, weakened, people. who suffered from mental and corporal illnesses. Her prophecies and predictions helped many people to avoid dangers and destruction, to find a right way in uneasy circumstances.

When the war began, the blissful asked all coming to her to bring willow branches. She broke them to sticks of identical length, cleared of a bark and prayed. Here neibourghs remembered that her fingers were wounded. She said often that she were invisible on fronts, helped our soldiers. On one day blissful Matron received till forty persons.

After sainted death of old Matrona, followed?? in 1952, people came to her tomb on the Danilovsky cemetery, prayed, hegged to help them and received a consolation, healing and support on the course of their life. On May, 1st, 1998 the coffin with true remains of the ascetic was brought to the Piously-Pokrovsk female monastery in Tagansky street. Glorification of blissful Matron Moscow as a sacred was made solemnly on May, 2nd, 1999. Since then pilgrimage of thousand faifthful people began to the monastery.

Blissful Matron was an orthodox person in deep, traditional meaning of this word. Compassion to people, out of completeness of the loving heart, a prayer, a sign of the cross, fidelity to sacred charters of the Orthodox Church that was the center of her intense spiritual life. Therefore, this righteous womans help which people receive, prayerfully asking for it, is spiritually fruitful: people are inspired by orthodox belief, join to the daily prayful life.

Matron is known among ten thousand of orthodox people. People tenderly name her Matronushka. She still helps people as she used to during her worldly life.
